What it really costs to make videos with Claude Code

We rendered real videos and wrote down every cost. Most styles come out at pennies, and some at nothing at all.

When people hear "AI video," they picture a bill for every clip. That's how most video tools work: you buy credits and spend them per video. Building your own generator with Claude Code changes the math, because the expensive part (drawing every frame) can be done by code running on your own computer.

Here is what each piece actually cost in our test renders.

Code-drawn styles: the near-free tier

Some styles never touch an image or video model. Chalkboard Sketch, Film Noir and whiteboard-style explainers are drawn entirely by code: every chalk stroke, newspaper spin and eraser wipe. Claude Code writes the animation, and your computer renders it into an MP4.

In one test, a fresh Claude Code session built a 27.6-second chalkboard short from a single style prompt and a script, then rendered 1,656 frames at 60 fps in under five minutes on an ordinary PC. No image fees, no video fees, no render service.

The most expensive step, drawing every frame, is done by your own computer.

Image styles: a few cents a short

Styles that need illustrated characters (comic, watercolor, collage) use an image model for the pictures, then code for all the motion. We tested five image models on the same four-scene comic story:

Image modelPer image45-second short10-minute video
Flux 2 Dev$0.013$0.23$1.27
GPT Image 1 Mini$0.013$0.23$1.29
GPT Image 2$0.042$0.75$4.16
Flux 2 Pro$0.045$0.81$4.50
Nano Banana 2.1$0.08$1.44$8.00

Prices measured October 2026 from fal.ai and OpenAI's published rates. A short assumes about 18 images; a 10-minute video about 100.

Our pick for most styles is the cheap model for most frames and the premium model for the hook. That puts a 10-minute video at roughly two dollars in images.

Voiceover and music: free if you want

Music and sound effects in our styles are synthesized by code: chalk scrapes, stamps, school bells, ambience and soft music beds. There's nothing to license. For narration you can run a free voice model on your own computer, or plug in a premium voice service for a few cents a short.

The part you do pay for: your Claude plan

Claude Code runs on your Claude plan. Each video uses part of that plan's allowance while Claude writes the animation, so heavy days can bump into your plan's usage limits. That's the real cost of the system, and it's flat no matter how many videos you make.

The bottom line

Renting a video tool means paying for every video. Owning your generator means paying for your Claude plan, plus a few cents of images on the styles that need them, and nothing extra on the styles that are drawn in code.

Questions

Do I need a powerful computer?

No. Our test renders ran on an ordinary Windows PC. Longer videos simply take longer to render.

Which styles cost nothing extra?

Styles drawn entirely in code, like Chalkboard Sketch, need no image or video model, so they add no per-video cost beyond your Claude plan.

Can I use my own voice?

Yes. Record your narration, and the generator times every visual to your words.
